Job Description

The Attending Veterinarian (AV) and Assistant Professor of Instruction has a leadership role and primary responsibility for stewarding the university's Veterinary Care Program for animals used for teaching, testing, and research, in accord with federal and accreditation requirements. The AV provides clinical care along with support for researchers and Lab Animal Resources personnel through training, consultation, inspections, and reporting. The AV is also expected to assist researchers in experimental design and implementation, thereby enabling increased levels of extramural grant funding. This individual will also contribute in a significant way to the educational mission of the university through instruction in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Ohio University's animal care program is concentrated at its campus in Athens, Ohio. Teaching activities associated with this position can potentially be carried out at Heritage College facilities on the university's campuses in Athens and/or Dublin, Ohio.

Detailed responsibilities include:

1. Provide oversight and guidance on all aspects of the Veterinary Care Program as required by federal regulation and AAALAC accreditation. Oversee and provide clinical care of all animals used in research, testing, and teaching. Oversee all aspects of pain/distress relief and euthanasia. Provide or coordinate timely medical care and emergency veterinary care at all times, including weekends and holidays. Oversee and provide input on preventative medicine and health surveillance programs. Oversee surgical programs and perioperative/postoperative care. Schedule regular animal facility visitations to observe animals and communicate with Lab Animal Resources staff on current status and issues. Provide guidance and support for domestic and international animal shipments.

2. Support activities as specified by regulation in support of the university's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Attend all IACUC meetings and serve as a voting member. Provide training on regulatory requirements and best practice as needed for IACUC members, researchers, and staff. Provide input to researchers on IACUC protocol development and review. Consult with researchers on minimizing animal pain and distress. Ensure personnel performing surgical procedures are appropriately qualified and trained, and provide training when needed. Participate in semi-annual program reviews and facility inspections of all university facilities where animals are housed or used in research, testing, and teaching. Develop and maintain Veterinary Care Program documentation.

3. Work with investigators to identify strategies for use of animal models to address research questions. Assist in experimental design. Identify potential technical challenges and methods for elimination or mitigating adverse impact. Review safety considerations and any specialized infrastructure requirements. Assist in drafting extramural grant proposal elements related to animal model implementation.

4. Participate in instructional activities for medical students as assigned in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Teaching will include coaching group learning activities and participation in medical education focused on immunology, microbiology, physiology, and pathophysiology depending on qualifications and interest. Contribute to service work as assigned in support of the instructional mission. Support mentoring of students and training of students in research methods.

Minimum Qualifications

A doctoral degree in veterinary medicine is required.

Must have or be eligible for board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, and be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Ohio.

Must obtain licensure in Ohio within 6 months of hire and maintain licensure throughout employment.
